Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does it mean to call someone a “mud pud?”

A: The name, mud pud, can be used to describe visionary artists, athletic underdogs, rebels with causes, pioneering thinkers, and unlikely heroes. A mud pud is a person who accomplishes remarkable feats despite being underprivileged, disadvantaged, or destitute. Any person who does not enjoy the same standard of living or rights as the majority of people in a society is a mud pud candidate, as long as the person does something special with his or her life.

Q: Why wouldn’t a wealthy person be considered a mud pud?

A: A wealthy person is actually eligible to be considered a mud pud. Since money does not buy happiness, a rich person who is sad is considered emotionally destitute, which is qualification enough for a mud pud. In some cases, though, financial resources present an unfair advantage in terms of quality of life, and so it seems appropriate to differentiate those who find success with the help of abundant resources and those who find success relying on grit and determination. Rags to riches stories certainly qualify as worthy mud puds candidates.

Q: Do all mud puds achieve success?

A: No. If a person can claim responsibility for success through hard work alone, then one might be expected to accept responsibility for failure. In that case, people who fail would be presumed to lack talent or willpower. Obviously, there are flaws in this reasoning. There are always external elements at play that can interfere with a person’s pursuit of success. Honest, dedicated people fail all of the time, and that does not mean they are any less worthy of success. The recipe for success is said to be 1-part effort and 3-parts luck. In any case, success is a loaded word, subject to myriad interpretations. Generally speaking, wholehearted pursuits do not guarantee success; for that reason, success is not a defining characteristic of a mud pud.
